Every week, I receive queries from many of you, all expressing concerns about the legitimacy of certain emails or texts and seeking advice on how to avoid falling victim to scams. The good news is that these scams and schemes all use common techniques, and once you learn to spot them, you’ll be able to delete them while chuckling at their audacity, idiocy… or both.
The most common email scam is called “phishing.” These emails pretend to be from a well-known company like Microsoft, UPS, or Costco and trick you into clicking on a link or calling a number. The scammers’ ultimate goal is to fool you into revealing sensitive information about yourself, such as your social security number or credit card details.
